Did you know? The Victoria Falls were formed more than 70 000 years ago after the gushing water of the Zambezi River, which flowed over hard basalt with large cracks filled with weaker sandstone, eroded the softer rock to create a deep chasm which became a waterfall. Victoria Falls has a rich history, with evidence of dinosaurs in the region as far back as 200 million years ago, followed by now extinct mammals such as buffalo with 3m horns, a short-necked giraffe with antlers and the African mammoth elephant. A large collection of late stone age tools has also been found around Victoria Falls, showing evidence of early man.The early Homo Sapiens in the area were San Bushmen and after the Bantu Migration down from west and east Africa,they were joined by the Tonga, Lozi and latterly the Nambya people, before the Ndebele came up from the south. In 1855 Scottish explorer and missionary David Livingstone became the first European to see Victoria Falls and named them after his Queen, bringing them to the attention of the world, after which the falls became a major tourist attraction. #history#nature#wonder#travel

How is my pose? Both males and females have heavy, ridged horns that grow straight out from the head or curve downward and then up. The horns are formidable weapons against predators and are used when jostling for space within the herd; males use the horns in fights for dominance.

Give me some air

Six thousand years ago Egyptians domesticated the African Wild Cat to control mice and rats raiding granaries. From these tamed animals, the domestic cat was bred. Apart from the difference in ear colouration and the longer legs, this species could easily be mistaken for a domestic cat. It is solitary in habits outside the breeding season, and mature animals are seldom seen. It is a ferocious little creature with the heart of a lion.

As soft as a mother's touch.⁣ ⁣ It's a long way down for this giraffe mom who has to crane her neck in order to groom her new-born baby. Giraffe calves measure in at around two metres tall at birth, but they quickly gain height and may be twice as big within a year. Their entry into the world can be a little rough – mother giraffes give birth standing up which means calves must endure a two-metre drop to the ground. Once there, the vulnerable new-borns have to quickly figure out how to walk and run – something they can do within an hour of being born. Thankfully, youngsters have the care and protection of their mothers to see them through these early challenges and it won't be long before this calf is mature enough to fend for itself.⁣ 📷 @beverlyjoubert ⁣

DID YOU KNOW? Crocodiles have rather different scales from those of other reptiles. Called ‘scutes’, they are bony and quite massive, but are not fused together joined to the underlying skeleton, so flexible fast movement is still possible. Each scute develops on its own, and is replaced by layers from below. The scutes are particularly massive on the back, perhaps because this is the area most exposed to the sun and most at risk of drying out…where the scutes are largest, the area of less waterproof skin between is smallest, so large scutes provide a good seal against water loss.
